Elvis Presley – Pentecostal Parents and Preachers
Elvis Presley, the great singer, songwriter and performer was raised by Pentecostal parents who met in a Pentecostal church. The father of Elvis, Vernon Presley, was a Pentecostal preacher and truck driver among other things. Elvis parents Vernon and Gladys met at a Pentecostal Church. His mother Gladys accompanied Elvis everywhere, including the First Assembly of God Church, where her uncle Gains Mansell was the preacher and where Elvis got his first real taste of music.

Unlike some stuffy, more traditional churches, Pentecostal churches move and flow in the Holy Ghost, encouraging lively worship, praise and exuberant expression to God. Likewise, Pentecostal churches welcome the miraculous demonstration and move of the Holy Spirit to heal and deliver people from demons. It is not surprising therefore the devil wanted to remove Elvis from his Pentecostal church roots and destroy his life (John 10:10). Undoubtedly, the first banana to get peeled is the one that is separated from the bunch. Apart from faith, family and friends; people self-destruct from all walks of life.
Elvis and his daughter both died tragically under the influence of drugs. Elvis Presley died at 42 years of age following years of prescription drug abuse. Elvis darling daughter (who Elvis used to wake up at a y0ung age to stand on the table and sing at night) Lisa Marie Presley, died recently at the age of 54. Like her father Elvis, Lisa Marie Presley’s demons (as documented by USA Today) included drug addiction. In 2019, she detailed her dependence on opioids in a foreword to the book “The United States of Opioids: A Prescription for Liberating a Nation in Pain.”
Clearly, the prescription America needs is not another medicinal pill, but rather meditation, prayer, the Gospel of God and the supernatural power of the Holy Spirit to fill us to overflowing with the divine anesthesia of heaven to remove our pain and lift us up in Jesus loving, merciful and mighty Name.
Elvis and Lisa Marie strayed a bit from their Pentecostal roots and church attendance, but most certainly kept their faith in Christ Jesus. Vernon, Elvis Presley’s father saw trouble coming, when his son Elvis entered the music industry and was not happy early on and tried to persuade his son Elvis to pursue another life path, but Elvis was intent on becoming a star. Yet, stardom, fortune and fame pleased and entertained millions but led to the self-destruction of Elvis (and many in Hollywood who have no internal anchor, compass, or guidance to hold them within when others began to clamor and pursue them for different reasons). You have to remain grounded in God lest you get pulled every which way and come undone among all the applause and fun.
Noting that she felt “grateful to be alive,” Lisa Marie Presley said painkillers prescribed after the birth of her twins eventually led to a full-blown addiction.”
“It’s a difficult path to overcome this dependence, and to put my life back together,” Lisa Marie Presley wrote. “Even in recent years, I have seen too many people I loved struggle with addiction and die tragically from this epidemic. It is time for us to say goodbye to shame about addiction. We have to stop blaming and judging ourselves and the people around us. … That starts with sharing our stories.”
It’s time people stop looking for a prescription for a quick fix and instead drop to their knees to pray and open the Word of God for divine meditation, reflection, godly insight, wisdom and pursue heavenly revelation to experience mind renewal and transformation (Romans 12:1-2).
Sadly, the life of an entertainer and being a celebrity in the eyes of the public, can make it difficult to go to church and worship God without people bothering you for photos or an autograph. Nevertheless, for personal wellbeing celebrities, stars, musicians, entertainers, and actors need to keep going to church to keep their lives grounded lest they lose all stability and fall into mischief, overly exalt and begin thinking too highly of themselves. Jesus Himself departed from the multitudes often to get alone, clear His mind, thoughts and pray to His heavenly Father. We must follow Jesus’ example.
Jesus is the rock of ages to whom we all must go, on which we all must stand, and realize when we leave the Lord we are standing on sinking sand and eventually will drown without any divine direction and fortification to uphold us in this crazy, turbulent and troublesome world in which we live.
Elvis began in church, but sadly left the church to pursue his music career. God gives human beings gifts, talents and abilities (James 1:17; Matthew 5:16; Ephesians 2:10). Yet, we must GUARD and GUIDE the gifts God gives us. If we do not guard our heart (Proverbs 4:20-23), we can easily self-destruct, unravel and begin sinking. Faith however is an anchor to our soul (Hebrews 6:19) and Jesus can heal us within to be whole (Luke 4:18). Doctors just give prescriptions by which many become drug addicts and enter a more Satanic possession and deeper realm of affliction. Jesus however imparts life and peace to bring divine transformation.
Elvis daughter Lisa Marie Presley said: “I was slowly starting to self-destruct, and I didn’t know where that was coming from.” I can tell you where it was coming from. Human beings were not made to merely live looking at me, myself and I. God created us to live in His glory, bear His image and likeness (Genesis 1:26-28) and live for a higher purpose. When we walk away from God and do life our own way, we disconnect from the divine life, love and supernatural flow of our Creator which fills us with the Holy Spirit of love and life (Romans 5:5; 8:1-2).
“I got bad advice. I was insulated with no grip on reality. They were taking my soul, my money, my everything” Lisa Marie said.
People are quick to take from you, but few come to love, serve, give and support you. Fortune and fame attracts many parasites who come to take from you and leverage your influence to wield their own. Beware and proceed with caution. Pray and ask God for discernment and the Holy Spirit to lead and guide you.
As the surviving son of a deceased mother who was an alcoholic and drug addict, I know a bit about emotional pain, suffering and addiction. My mother was adopted and emotionally struggled with that, as demons lied to her and made her feel rejected because of it. The truth however is the parents who adopted my mother were wonderful and outstanding parents to me in my mother’s absence. Thus, she perpetuated the generational curse by abandoning me my Mom wrestled with her own demons. I also saw my maternal grandfather struggle with alcoholism, he being a retired U.S. Army Lt. Colonel. Likewise, my brother and cousins also had some tough times with alcoholism and drugs. Only by God’s grace did I not follow in the same deadly and destructive path.
God has supernaturally lifted me above that and led me to a more fun and fulfilling purpose for which I am eternally grateful. Yet, at the age of 12, I also contemplated suicide when life was terribly tough and painful. Thankfully, the Holy Spirit and angels of God were with me to redirect my energy, fill me with faith and hope, and lead me to a place of victory in Jesus with whom I overcome my challenges daily.
Let us never forget that “the wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23), but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. Eternal life is one thing, but living victorious on earth daily with consistency and longevity requires you to continually abide in God’s Word (John 8:31) to ensure you experience life abundantly (John 10:10), build a lasting legacy and have something rich beyond money to deposit into your children and grandchildren by way of posterity.
