True Prophets – Church Growth – Spiritual Principles
True prophets speak in the name of the Lord God and are willing to suffer affliction with patience for declaring the truth (James 5:10). Conversely, pillow prophets speak words of flattery for money to please and appease people, while disregarding the true word of the Lord (Galatians 1:10-12). “A lying tongue hates those that are afflicted by it; and a flattering mouth ruins people” (Proverbs 26:28).
“God’s Word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path” (Psalm 119:105).
As for wordless and prayerless Christians who lack divine guidance, their spiritual laziness and neglect compels them like the children of Israel to seek prophets (Exodus 20:18-19) to tell them what God is saying since they have not taken the time to go to Jesus themselves (John 10:27) to hear His voice and be Spirit led (Romans 8:14; John 16:13). Nevertheless, we all have different measures and levels of faith. Some people seek divine confirmation through prophets when they doubt (Romans 14:23) and are double-minded (James 1:8), or are overwhelmed and their vision clouded by their circumstances (Acts 9:17-18; 26:19). Likewise, we are all at different places on our spiritual journey, some still in the season of discovery to be established in the faith (1Corinthians 14:24-25) and their walk with God. Most importantly, the true prophet ultimately points people to Jesus (to establish a firm, lasting and enduring spiritual foundation) not himself (John 1:29,36). For this reason Pastors leading churches who neglect to teach God’s Word and merely focus on the operation of spiritual gifts, prophecy or otherwise, tend to build churches merely on their personality, not the principles of God’s Word and the people within their congregation therefore remain immature and unstable since they are not being fed God’s Word. Such unsustainable spiritual leadership was proven already by Moses who had a miracle ministry, but failed to teach the children of Israel the ways of God (Psalm 103:7) which resulted in the latter dying in the wilderness and Moses only seeing, but never entering the promised land himself (Deuteronomy 34:4).
